Problems related to the lack of functional swimbladder in intensive rearing of the seabass Dicentrarchus labrax and the sea bream Sparus auratus . ArchiMer
Chatain, Beatrice.
The primordial inflation of swimbladder normally occurs at a size of 4 to 5 mm in sea bream Sparus auratus and 5 to 6 mm in sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax . However, in intensive larval rearing conditions, lack of inflation is often observed and leads to the production of up to 80% of postlarvae whose swimbladder is not functional. They are, on the average, 20-30% smaller in weight than normal fry. Their survival rate can also be reduced by any kind of stress such as weaning, handling or hypoxic conditions. It is suggested that the selective mortality which affects the abnormal fish results both from a decrease in predatory efficiency and an increase in energetic needs.

ArchiMer
Gobert, Bertrand.
The foreign artisanal fishery of Pointe-Noire (Congo) significantly evolved since its beginning, in the 1950s, by the number of fishermen and canoes, as well as the fishing techniques used and by its socio-economic organization. The fishery for Sardinella by surface gill-nets, its main activity, is based on common ownership and savings, thus allowing partial reinvestment of fishing revenues, the riskier (such as bottom gill-net) being left to individual initiatives. The foreign fishery employs many Congolese fishermen, in a permanent or very occasional way. However no improvement effect seems to have taken place in favor of the local artisanal fishery.

Redescubrimiento de Stegastes otophorus (Poey, 1860) (Pisces: Pomacentridae) en Cuba OceanDocs
Varela, C.; Garrido, O..
The rediscovery of the damselfish Stegastes otophorus (Poey, 1860) in Cuba is recorded. The localization of six demes with information on the habitat, behaviour, and feeding habits of one of them is also given. The living coloration of a juvenil and one adult from two different demes are described. In order to facilitate comparisons, three juveniles and two adults from Cuba, are illustrated. The adoption of “diablo azul” as a common name is proposed.

In order to analyse the diet of Schizodon intermedius Garavello & Britski, 1990, captures were made every season during the period of April/1990 to February/1991, using gillnets of different mesh size at Sertanópolis, a region of Paraná State. An analysis of stomach fullness degree was made upon 76 individuals (including young ones). A sample of 20 adult specimens was chose to compare the morphology of the digestive tract with the diet found. It was concluded that S. intermedius is a grazer herbivore whose principal diet consists of leaves and stalks of two monocotyledonous plants: Poaceae and/or Cyperaceae. This species shows quanlitative, but not qualitative feeding seasonal variations. It was verified that intestinal quotient of the species is X...

Rosa,Ricardo S; Menezes,Naércio A.
The Brazilian fish fauna is still poorly known with respect to its diversity and conservation status, particularly of freshwater species. Human activities and population growth are rapidly impacting this fauna to an unchecked extent, so that many fish species are presently threatened. Also, some areas have been so critically altered that their fish fauna can no longer be properly inventoried. There is an urgent need to evaluate the conservation status of Brazilian fish species, since none are presently listed as endangered by federal legislation. Based on a literature search and a survey directed to the Neotropical ichthyologists, we present an unofficial list including a total of 78 threatened fish species (12 elasmobranchs and 66 actinopterygians). Of...

Review and current status of the aquaculture potential for the mahimahi, Coryphaena hippurus ArchiMer
Kraul, S.
The mahimahi, Coryphaena hippurus , has excellent potential for aquaculture due to its fast growth (2 kg at 6 months, 9 kg at 1 year), good food conversion efficiency (30%, wet weight), high fecundity with natural captive spawns (200,000 eggs/female/2 days year round for a 1 year old female), and high price (US$ 9.00/kg wholesale in Hawaii).

Role of steroid hormones and external factors in the control of pituitary gonadotropic activity of female European eel (Anguilla anguilla ). ArchiMer
Leloup, H; Fontaine, Y; Dufour, S; Querat, B.
Gonadotropic activity is relatively low in the female freshwater (FW) eel (A. anguilla ): pituitary GTH was about 15 ng equivalent cGTH/mg fresh tissue. Plasma GTH was always less than 1 ng equivalent cGTH/ml and often undetectable (< 0.2 ng equivalent cGTH/ml). Ovarian steroidogenesis in FW fish is similarly low; plasma concentration of both free testosterone (T) and free estradiol (E sub(2)) were less than 0.3 ng/ml as measured by RIA. Treatment with E sub(2) in FW fish caused a great increase in pituitary GTH, up to 1000 times control values, without changing plasma GTH. Stimulation of gonadotropic activity and ovarian development occur during the eel's migration to the Sargasso Sea. Adaptation to seawater (SW) caused a great increase of plasma E...

Status and potential of Australian Lates calcarifer culture. ArchiMer
Mackinnon, M.
Lates calcarifer is distributed widely in northern Australia and is important to both commercial and recreational fisheries. There is the research on hatchery production of the species in 1984 and this work is continuing. Hatchery reared fish have been stocked to reservoirs in northern Queensland and have been used in experimental grow-out trials. Fish weaned onto formulated diets by the age of 25 days were reared to marketable size (> 500 g) in freshwater tanks. Despite suboptimal water temperatures the fish reached market size by the age of twelve months. Taste panel analysis showed that the pellet fed fish were of good quality. The sensitivity of growth rates to water temperature was demonstrated in both grow-out trials and reservoir stockings.

Kentouri, M; Divanach, P.
In aquaculture and particularly during fish larval rearing when the time between moment of stress application and the non-return point acquisition is very limited, criteria which may provide health state and stock evolution are of great importance. Now, in stress responce chronology, the specific behavioral scheme modification is first noted. This early identification, associated with initial conditions restoration, generaly do not involve after effects. Ethological knowledge beeing the basis of this for-casting strategy, the authors define in this study a simplified behavioral scheme of four sparid larval species in a range of physiological conditions.

The Australian mariculture industry: Finfish, molluscs and crustaceans. ArchiMer
Baker, J; Kenway, M.
Australia's interest in mariculture has been comparatively recent when compared with the developments in many other Pacific countries. Two exceptions are native oysters, cultivated for food since the late 1880's, and pearl oysters which have been cultured, particularly in the northern part of Australia, following the initial work of Saville-Kent.

The significance of colour patterns in fish for the study of some fundamental issues in behaviour. ArchiMer
Baerends, Gerard P..
In this paper, the author shows why fish can be extremely valuable subjects for the study of a number of behaviour problems of crucial fundamental importance. As this special suitability is based on the capacity of changing rapidly and reversibly the body colouration and its marking patterns, he gives examples of the relation between colours and behaviour in fish.

Lemarie, Gilles; Gasset, Eric.
The authors present the necessary to sort catfish and sea bream fries in order to limit cannibalism, to constitute homogeneous groups. In the same time they studied different sorters (bars sorter, grating sorter and the conception of an experimental sorter) and their effects on the juveniles (behaviour). Introduction: In hatchery, early sorting of Sea Bass or Sea Bream fry after weaning can become necessary for several reasons: a) To obtain homogeneous batches thus simplifying growing management by better controlling: - Specific water flow for precise ranges of size or weight, - Food distribution granularity, - Daily feeding rate. b) To limit cannibalism which can become high when population dispersion is spread out. This dispersion greatly increases...

Symptoms recalling a nutritional pathology and more precisely a process of lipid peroxydation were observed during the last years in seabass Dicentrarchus labrax and other fishes cultured in tropical marine condition, Ocyurus chrysurus and Lutjanus analis . They included dark coloration, skin ulceration, lethargy, anorexy, emaciation. Histological examinations showed hepatic fatty degenerative lesions, pancreatitis, muscular degeneration and retinal atrophy. Additional vitamins E and C in the food suppressed that pathological symptoms. The previously evoked clinical or histological signs were not achieved in spite of an increase of the level of hepatic, muscular or blood malondialdehyde and of the conjugated dienes of the perivisceral fat.
